Earlier today in a packed to capacity ST Helens Church in Hemsworth Standard Bearers Tim Humphreys and Colin Cranswick with Buglers Craig Rosser, Pete Bate and Kev Fawcett from the Veterans Buglers Association joined Joe Lowe's family, friends and former KOYLIs who served with him.

Joe served in the KOYLI/2LI for 6 years where for a time was a Battalion PTI. After leaving the army he remained a keen sportsman and was an accomplished rugby player playing for Hemsworth Tigers and Doncaster Rovers where in a match that saw the end of Doncaster Rovers 7 month losing streak he was named Man of the Match. A televised programme about Doncaster Rovers called 'Another Bloody Sunday' has clips of Joe playing for Doncaster which can be found on Youtube.

During the funeral service Joe's niece Lisa spoke about her uncle Joe and what he meant to the family she also told how Joe came to join the Army:

"He was his parents first born. He was an adored son that his mum, my Grandma, wanted to keep her first born close to home. So when he applied to join to be in the Navy, because he wanted to travel and see something of the world, she burnt the letter which said he'd passed the medical and fitness test telling Joe he must have failed! Determined to join the forces he secretly applied for the army - when 2 army officers turned up at his mums door she chased them down the path shouting 'don't come for my son, get your own' "

It is with sadness that we have to report the George Joseph Lowe late KOYLI and 2LI passed away on 10 Apr 2018 aged 72. The thoughts and condolences of all members of the Association are with Joe's wife Lorraine, son Mark and all family members at this very sad and difficult time.
