For full details please read the press release below from Doncaster Council.
Doncaster’s War Memorial in Bennetthorpe reaches its centenary on 12 March and the city will be marking the occasion with an event and short service at the site, starting at 12 noon.
Military representatives and Veterans associations will gather in Elmfield Park on Sunday 12 March and a procession will then march through the park gates to the War Memorial. A short service delivered by The Rev'd Andrew Martlew TD, Associate Priest, Doncaster Minster will take place, and a wreath-laying led by Mayor Ros Jones.
There will be Regimental Standard Bearers and Buglers from The Rifles present and the Last Post will be played. There will also be representation from the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI) veterans and Mounted Police which is fitting as the band of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and Mounted Police led the original parade in 1923.
To commemorate the centenary of the War Memorial and Elmfield Park, an elm tree is also to be planted in the park.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “On Monday 12th March 1923, Doncaster residents gathered at the unveiling of the memorial in what must have been a tremendously moving and poignant ceremony".
“100 years later, we will follow in their footsteps and honour this important part of the city’s heritage at the same time paying tribute to the servicemen and women who have sacrificed so much in the World Wars and other conflicts. Everyone is welcome.”
