HM Armed Forces Veterans Identity Card Beta Trial Started

The MOD has started a roll-out to a selected group of veterans from across all branches of the Armed Forces Veterans community. The MOD has selected those who are in this phase of the roll-out and have contacted them by email. This is a genuine email and is for the individual only and not to be shared.

The email states

"This email is an invitation to test the online service for applying for an HM Armed Forces Veteran Card. Please do not share this email or application link with others. This invitation is for you only.

This is a real application, and you will get your Veteran Card once you submit a complete application. If you do not want a Veteran Card or have already applied, please disregard this email. Alternatively, if you would like to apply by paper application form, please get in touch to be added to the next test group."

This phase is for veterans living in the UK. Veterans who are living outside of the UK may receive the invitation but are not able to participate in this phase. This is verified during the online checking process.

The MOD is using this limited roll-out to check the online application process and asks that the individual complete a feedback questionnaire. In the email the MOD states:

"This is a test service, so there may be things that you discover that could be better. Your feedback is really important to help us to improve the way the service works.

Please report back how you found the application process by completing this survey immediately after using the service, even if you do not submit an application. It will take less than 5 minutes."

The invitation email has a link to a website that you must access to complete the process by the date given in the email.

What you'll need

To use this service, you'll need to prove your identity using GOV.UK One Login. You'll be able to create a GOV.UK One Login in the service if you do not already have one.

GOV.UK One Login is new. At the moment, you can only use it to access some government services. It does not work with all government accounts or services yet. In the future, you'll be able to use GOV.UK One Login to access all services on GOV.UK.

Create a GOV.UK One Login

You'll need:

  • an email address

  • a way to get security codes to sign into your GOV.UK One Login, for example, a mobile phone

  • if you do not already have a GOV.UK One Login, you'll also need photo ID, for example, a UK passport or UK driving licence

To complete your application for an HM Armed Forces Veteran Card you will need:

  • your service number for your last period of service

  • your National Insurance number

  • the year you started and ended your HM Armed Forces service

  • a recent digital passport-style photo showing your head and shoulders

Collect any details you need before you start. Having this information will help you answer the questions.

You will also need:

  • an authentication app such as Microsoft or Google Authenticate, and the Gov.UK ID Check app, all of which are available on your device's app store.

  • to create a GOV.UK One Login if you do not already have one. This is different from the GOV.UK Gateway Login which will not work with veterans ID card application process. Note:

If you have received the email invitation and need advice about completing the process or how to install the authentication apps there are contact details in the email to obtain assistance. You can also contact the Association Secretary via his mobile number.
