Last night (24 Nov), at Guildhall in the City of London, The Rifles celebrated what makes our Regiment so special by recognising the outstanding contributions made by selected Riflemen from across the Five Pillars of the Regiment in 2020 and 2021.
An Awards Presentation by the Colonel-in-Chief, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, and Colonel Commandant, in the company of five Royal Colonels, and US Ambassador was attended by 370 distinguished guests and fellow Riflemen. A bugle display and speech on female Riflemen capped an excellent evening.
Paul 'Sammy' Goose received a Colonel-in-Chief Award in recognition of Paul sounding Last Post every evening from March to 31 December 2020.
The citation read - "From the 29th of March until the 31st December 2020, Paul 'Sammy' Goose (ex 1st Battalion, The Light Infantry) paid tribute to the victims of the COVID 19 pandemic by sounding Last Post on his bugle in their memory every evening. This action attracted regional and national attention and in so doing enabled him to raise over £10,000 for Barnsley Hospital. He has displayed outstanding commitment as a veteran of The Rifles to one of the historic communities in the North of England that underpin the Regiment."
Our congratulations to Paul on his award. Paul was also thanked in person by the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Professor Dame Hilary Chapman DBE who was a guest at the event.
