At a ceremony held at The 5 Towns Veterans Support Hub in Featherstone, Ed Anderson CBE, Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, presented The King's Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) to the dedicated volunteer veterans who manage the Hub.
Equivalent to an MBE, KAVS is the highest Award given to local voluntary groups in the UK, and they are awarded for life.
The award was first established in 2002 to celebrate Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee under the name of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS). Following the accession of His Majesty The King, the award continues to celebrate the best of local volunteering across the UK yearly. On the 14th November 2024, His Majesty’s actual birthday, we celebrate the very best of local volunteering, showcasing how volunteer groups create a positive impact in their communities.
The 5 Towns Veterans Support Hub consists of veterans and individuals dedicated to aiding veterans and their families. The Hub is situated in a previously neglected building in Purston Park, Featherstone, which underwent significant renovations by Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, Wakefield District Housing, and veterans. After the renovations were completed, it was officially opened in September 2022 by the Lord-Lieutenant.
The volunteer team at The 5 Towns Veterans Support Hub has made a substantial impact on the veteran community across the 5 Towns region, bolstered by the dedication of the volunteers, and the backing of external agencies and military associations in the area.
Maxine Jordan and Eileen Richardson, the widow of the late KOYLI SNCO Albert Richardson, are two members of our Association who regularly volunteer at the hub.
